Around 2600 years ago, the Assyrians forcibly exiled the Ten Israelite tribes to points unknown; hence "lost." A small percentage of each of these tribes is still among us, but most of them were exiled and didn't return.

What was the name given to the group of scattered Israelites?

The Israelite Tribes that were scattered by the Assyrians in 722 B.C.E. are typically called the TEN LOST TRIBES, since they lost their religion and historical identity after the Assyrian conquest and deportation.

Were any of the Ten Lost tribes Cherokee?

If the question refers to the reputed "ten lost tribes" of Israel, they would have been Semitic, not American Indian. Ethnically, there is no relationship between the Israelites and the Cherokee. Moreover, the American Indians had allready been in the Americas for thousands of years before the destruction of Israel in 722 BCE. Biblical legend has it that there were twelve tribes of the Hebrew people, ten of whom lived in the northern Hebrew kingdom of Israel and two tribes in southern Judah. When the Assyrians finally conquered Israel, they deported many of the inhabitants, replacing them in what was now the Assyrian province of Samaria, with conquered peoples from elsewhere in the empire. The former Israelites gradually assimilated into their host communities, adopting their religions and cultures, until they entirely lost their ethnic identity. Thus, the legend of the ten lost tribes.

How did the Lost Tribes of Israel earn their name?

Where the kingdom of Israel was destroyed by foreign invaders and its people scattered, the identities of the legendary Twelve Tribes were seriously compromised and it became customary to speak of these as "lost." In recent years, some folks in places rather remote from Israel have been noticed as practicing Hebraic customs, some of these people even identify themselves as one or more of the "lost tribes." However, cultural diffusion is a tricky thing, as ideas can be passed on without exchange of the actual people. New sciences such a genetic profiling may someday give us a more definitive answer on who belongs to the "lost" tribes.

Where is the original nation of israel?

1) Geographically, the original country of Israel is where the modern country of Israel exists today. The borders are not identical, but Israel overlays its ancient location to a large degree.2) In terms of genealogy, the descendants of the ancient Tribes of Israel today are the Jewish people worldwide. The great majority of Jews today, some 80% or so, are descended from the tribe of Judah (plus converts and descendants of converts). The remaining 20% include Levites (from the tribe of Levi), Cohanim (also a part of the Levites), the entire Tribe of Benjamin, and a small percentage from every one of the remaining tribes. (When the Ten Tribes were carried off into Assyria and didn't return, a few of them had already mixed into the tribe of Judah before that, through marriage. Also, the Talmud relates [Megillah 14b] that, one century after the Ten Tribes were exiled [and their location was still known], Jeremiah journeyed to where they were and brought some of them back to Judea. Thus, today's Jewry includes a small percentage of every one of the Lost Tribes. See for example the Talmud, Pesachim 4a.)As to the location of the bulk of the lost Ten Tribes, because of the lack of a continuous tradition in this particular matter, we can only speculate. Some well-known claims, such as the suggestion that the Native Americans or African Americans are the Lost Israelite Tribes, we can confidently dismiss offhand. Other claims, such as that which has been suggested concerning the Pathani (Pashtun), are less far-fetched but must for the time being remain nothing more than a guess.See also:Jewish history timelineAre Hebrews Israelites and Jews the same people?Debunking the "From the Khazars" canard

Why deny that the Spartans and Romans are the lost tribes?

The notion of the ten lost tribes of Israel refers to the ancient Israelites who were exiled after the Assyrians defeated Israel in 722 BCE. Presumably they were assimilated into the indigenous populations with which they were exiled, and thus lost their separate ethnic identity. However, many have been uncomfortable that Israelites would so readily forsake their ancient God or their separate identity, and so look for evidence that the lost tribes survived after all. Various people of Jewish faith, such as Ethiopian Jews and Jews from various parts of Asia have been suggested as the long-lost missing tribes. To propose the Romans or Spartans as the lost tribes of Israel would be no more far-fetched. However, the Romans were a Latin people, who are known to have occupied the southern bank of the Tiber River since around the tenth century BCE. They could not have been a missing tribe from the late eighth century BCE. Similarly, Sparta is known from the second millennium BCE and is too early for the lost tribes.

Who are the lost tribe of the bible and were they African?

The Ten Lost Tribes of Israel were ten of the twelve tribes of the Ancient Israelites who were defeated by the Assyrians and forcibly deported (as was common Assyrian custom). They lost their distinctive Israelite heritage. There is some speculation as to whether some of the lost tribes of Israel were African, but most people believe that the Lost Tribes of Israel merely lost their distinctive heritage and became part and parcel of other ethnic and religious groups in the Middle East.

When Christianity migrated to Russia where did it come from?

When the people of Israel were eventually released from captivity to return to their homeland, some migrated northward. These people are known today as The Lost Tribes. They would have taken the teachings of Christ with them. When Christ returns again the Lost Tribes will also return from the North Countries and bring with them their writings, these we will have the opportunity to read.
