The temples werr place to honor their gods, and to make offerings or sacrifices.

They had to make sure that their gods and goddesses were happy (bringing benefits to their worshippers) rather than sad or angry (which led to calamity and misfortune).

Because the Gods were not usually very kind. So, they would build temples to please the gods and gain their favor. Often it was to honor a god who had done something to help them, such as Apollo who slain the serpent of Pytho (Delphi). In appreciation Pytho worshiped Apollo as their sort of 'signature god'. People knew that their gods were jealous and tempermental and they figured if they honored a god such as Athena, she would help protect them from other gods when they threw their fits.
