The ancient Egyptians believed in the afterlife. they also believed that to get to the afterlife your body must remain on Earth intact. therefore they preserved the body to retain the soul in their Gods heaven.

They created mummies because they believed in after life. They knew that the body of their dead people would decay and therefore, the person would go to the after life with either a very ugly appearance or skeleton. By mummifying these dead bodies they made sure that no bacteria is left in the body and it can't decade; so, the person would enter the afterlife with all its beauty.
