Napoleon III was a descendant of Napolen I, who was the general who successfully defended the French Revolution from other European monarchies who tried to overthrow it on the grounds that republicanism would set a bad precedent in their own countries. While there is a certain hypocrisy in Napoleon's actions, there is no doubt that he was a brilliant general, and such people acquire loyal followers who forgive them their hypocrisy.

Why was France ready to accept an emperor for life after they had just been through a revolution?

France was completely destroyed after the revolution. None of the other European countries wanted anything to do with the violent French anymore and since the French had killed their monarchs (and about 30.000 others), and as the revolution backfired also a lot of revolutionaries, France had become rudderless and was one huge chaos. Napoleon Bonaparte took advantage, and committed a coupe, making himself the controller of France and turning it into an Empire by crowning himself emperor. France had been desperate for someone to step up with a plan how to save this bankrupt and blood drenched country, and Napoleon was the man to do it. France was exhausted of fighting and all the blood and executions. The French had to admit that their revolution was no success and they had lost all credibility to the outside world. They needed a hero and found one brave enough to take the job.

Why were the French people willing to accept a dictator after fighting so hard for their independence?

The English revolution led to Cromwell, the Russian to Lenin, the French to Napoleon. The fact that this did not happen in America is wholly exceptional, and probably due to the fact that there were 13 independent colonies, and 13 dictators were not available.

How did hapoleon die?

There were three rulers of the name Napoleon. Napoleon I, the original French Emperor, was defeated at Waterloo in 1815 and exiled to the isle of St. Helena off the coast of Africa. In 1821 the Emperor's health began to fail, and British doctors were called to the island that May. They could not find the cause of his illness and could only prescribe painkillers. Napoleon died on May 5, 1821. An autopsy found that the cause of death was stomach cancer. Although conspiracy theories said that he could have been killed through arsenic poisoning, modern analysts generally accept the stomach cancer hypothesis. Napoleon II, son of Napoleon I, had a much more straightforward death. He died of tuberculosis at Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria, on July 22, 1832. Napoleon III, nephew of Napoleon I, died as the result of kidney failure brought on by the distress of an overlarge bladder stone. Although the theory is without proof, it has long been suspected that the Emperor actually died as the result of incompetence on the part of his physician.
