One reason is that the art of Amphibious Warfare had not been developed at the time. Another reason is that the Turkish resistance to the landings was not only fierce, it was also well executed.

The landings were attempted at night and boats drifted in the dark away from the intended landing place, ending up at the bottom of steep cliffs in the place we now call ANZAC cove. here they could find little cover from Turkish guns.
