The battle started because Lee's poorly shod invading forces took a detour to commandeer shoes from a warehouse in Gettysburg and accidentally encountered a Union patrol out looking for them. The patrol sent word back to send reinforcements and fought a delaying action that held up the Confederates until the Federal forces had seized the high ground on the hills outside of town and set up a defensive perimeter.

The war started because a peaceful solution to the problem of slavery and states rights could not be found after years of compromise and half measures.
