they didnt, we declared war on them for attacking us. they "provoked" us to declare war, though we provoked them first by taking away their oil
The US did not declare war on Germany. Germany declared war on the US, on December 11, 1941. This was four days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and three days after the US declared war on Japan. Shortly after, Italy also declared war on the US. The procedure is the president asks Congress for a Declaration of War, and Congress then votes on the question.
The President asked congress to declare war on Japan, congress agreed.
I believe it was December 8, 1941, the day after pearl harbor was attacked by the Japanese.....
The United States was bombed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor which cause a declaration of war but Germany had an alliance with Japan and it had forced the United States to declare war on Germany too. Then Germany had an alliance with Italy which cause the United States to declare war on yet another country. Then the world was at war and therefore World War 2 started.
The US did not declare war on Germany. Germany declared war on the US shortly after the Japanese attack on Hawaii.

If you mean in WWII then this is what I have got. Germany did not actually declare war on the Americans. When the Japanese bombed Perl Harbour in America the Americans wanted to declare war on the Japanese but the British persuaded the Americans that it was the Germans that started it and so the Americans declared war on the Germans and any other army with them including the Japanese on 11th December 1941. Hope that helps! =)
The Japanese bombing the U.S fleet at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii on the 7th December 1941 is what ultimatley caused the U.S to declare war during world war 2.

The year was 1941, and the reason was in response to the Japanese attack on the US Fleet at Pearl Harbor the day before.
No, and the US did not declare war on Finland. However, UK declared war on Finland on 6 December 1941.
For the United States, only the US Congress has the power to declare war. That's explicit in the US consitution.
The American leaders banned the sale of oil to Japan to slow down a japanese war machine and this was a serious threat to future plans for the Japanese
