Korean War!
The Korean War was practically a conventional WWII fight from day one, then it transitioned into a WWI fight...equipped with stale-mated trenches and the whole works...ultimately even ending like WWI did; with an armistice. WWI, WWII, and the Korean War (for the US) even lasted about same times: 3 years (one year for the US during WWI). Vietnam grew like a cancer and lasted 5 times longer than the Korean War...AND unlike the Korean War...Vietnam was a communist victory!

You are probably referring to the Korean War, in which active military hostilities took place from 1950 to 1953. However, even in 2014, the Korean War is technically not over, since North and South Korea have never signed a peace treaty to end the war.
