Not just the Mandans - by this time they had permanently joined with the Hidatsas and Arikaras.
Like-a-Fishhook village was established on a site well known to both the Mandans and Hidatsas on the north side of the Knife River about 50 miles above Fort Clark. French trappers called the area L'Ours Qui Danse (Dancing Bear), probably because the Hidatsas held their Bear Ceremony there. The Hidatsas had decided to move from their existing village because of the shortage of firewood, so the Mandans had to move as well.
There was good agricultural land at Dancing Bear, an ample supply of wood and a projecting bluff overlooking the river that would make a good defensive site for a village when a stockade was erected.
Most importantly the American Fur Company (later called Pierre Chouteau and Company) had already erected a few buildings nearby.
The result was that Like-a-Fishhook and Fort Berthold were built at the same time in the same locality in around 1845, to the mutual advantage of natives and fur traders.
