free labor. despite continuing social and moral arguments (see above), the only demonstrable incentive to maintain slavery, for so long, was economic.

at the time, lots of people saw lots of obvious reasons to get rid of it. just as you see them today. sadly, the competing incentive of ENORMOUS capital, proved too strong, for many many many years.
