Why did the Vikings leave Cape Cod?

There is no evidence that the Vikings ever made it as far south as Cape Cod. They did start a settlement in New Foundland, however, which they later abandoned, probably because it wasn't suitable for farming and because of attacks from native inhabitants.

The original grant of land included areas farther to the south. It was only because they could not safely sail through offshore shoals that they returned and settled in Plymouth. They briefly considered the Cape Cod region around Provincetown Harbor, but were concerned about the location after confrontations with the local Indians (from whose burial mounds they stole some corn). This led them to establish their colony at Plymouth on the mainland, about 20 miles to the west).
