Many plantations below New Orleans had drainage canals, running east-west, to keep their land dry. Generally emptying into Lake Ponchartrain. When the British entered the Lake Jackson ordered all these canals blocked. The owner of Chalmette ignored this order, and the British found his unobstructed canal and used their ships' boats to travel through the swamp to the east bank of the Mississippi just below Chalmette house. They went into camp as their full force was ferried through to the River, and Jackson moved his force down and built barricades to stop them heading north into New Orelans.
