Instead of continuing the pursuit against Washington's army northward after the battle of White plains, Lord William Howe decided to turn back and attack Fort Washington.

He detached a force of 8,000 British and Hessian men to converged upon the fort.

Though the position was indefensible, the American commander, Col. Magaw decided to hold it but was badly defeated and forced to surrender with his army, on Nov. 16, 1776.
