The Irish Republican Army (IRA) were a paramilitary group with the goal of freeing Ireland from British rule. They originally formed in 1913, under the name "The Irish Volunteers," in response to the Ulster Volunteer Force's creation in Northern Ireland (which was intended to help prevent the Home Rule - a document trying to let Southern Ireland vote on their own taxes) They officially became the IRA in 1969.
The term goes back to when Ireland was still completely under British rule and did not have a parliament of its own, between 1801 and 1921. Home Rule was the desire by some for Ireland to have its independence and rule itself. The term is not really used now, but it would now be the concept of a united Ireland. Currently Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.

Yes it closed in the late1980s. I believe it was the first to be called BHS....."British" was a problematic adjective in Ireland at the time.
