The first groups to settle in the area known as Canaan were the Canaanites and the Hebrews. The Canaanites, a Semitic people, established city-states and engaged in agriculture and trade. The Hebrews, traditionally believed to be descendants of Abraham, entered the region later and developed their distinct cultural and religious identity, eventually forming the Kingdom of Israel.
They settled in the Massachusetts Bay area. The first colony was on the east coast of North America.
The first people to settle in Chester-le-Street were likely the Romans, who established a fort there around AD 80 as part of their efforts to secure the northern frontier of Britain. Following the Roman withdrawal, the area was inhabited by various tribes, including the Anglo-Saxons, who established a settlement in the 7th century. The town later became significant as a religious center, particularly with the establishment of a church that housed the relics of St. Cuthbert.

A pioneer is a person who is among the first to explore and settle in a region. Pioneers not only settle in a specific region but they also develop that area.
The Romans built the first proper town on the site and named it Londinium. However, there were already people living in the area before the Romans arrived.
