Why did the people stay on the titanic when it was sinking?

Titanic had been advertised as being ' unsinkable'. Many people stayed on board thinking it would just settle down eventually and everyone would be safe. Wrong - the iceberg tore a long slit along the hull, causing several compartments to be flooded - too many for the ship to remain afloat.
