William Bradford joined the Separatist church in Scrooby at the age of 17 and in 1609 he immigrated with the congregation to the Netherlands. For 11 years they lived in Leyden until they feared that by assimilation into Dutch culture they would loose their English identity and found only low paying jobs. The Separatists, a tiny minority, within the Puritian movement concluded that the Church of England was too corrupt to be reformed from within. Some decided to move again. They then left the Netherlands for North America on the Mayflower. The Pilgrims arrived in 1621 with a large number of non-Separatist settlers. After an experiment with "common course" the colony quickly centered around private subsistence agriculture.
