As the Europeans thought that they were a better people than the Aborigine, they assumed themselves the leader of the 'new land'. Totally disregarding the Aboriginal culture and way of life, they enforced the English way of life and laws upon the natural inhabitants. The Aboriginal way of life was to live off the land, they lived a nomadic way of life, travelling to different parts of bush to get their food and shelter. Their religion was the Dreamtime. However that did not matter. Think about it, what would you do if someone came into your neighbourhood or lifestyle and said. "You can no longer live like you do, you need to follow MY rules"! The English settler's settled the land. They took the land off the natural inhabitants, remembering, the Aboriginals didn't own the land, they lived off it. There were no owners. The settlers killed the local food sources to eat, so when the Aboriginals decided, " You kill ours, so we will kill yours", things got heated. Settlers were speared, Aboriginals were shot, so, Governor Stirling took 25 mounted, armed troops to a river in Pinjarra, where they split into 2 groups, and attacked a group of Aboriginals from two sides. The Aboriginals had no chance. It wasn't only the Men who were hunted, the war party shot, women, children and elders. Out of the 70 Aborigines only about 10 survived. There was one fatality on the European side, Captain Ellis, fell off his horse and sustained head injuries. Is this a battle? Should it be known as a Battle in history books? Thet say History is written by the winners, did they win by destroying a whole family and tribe of Natural Inhabitants? Is the Battle of Pinjarra a worthy title?
