Why did the roman Civil War occur?

After the Gracchus brothers were assassinated quite violently, armies took on a new role. The armies were now loyal to the generals instead of Rome itself.

The reason behind this can be explained by using General Marius as an example. Unemployment in Rome was in massive numbers (which is what the Gracchus brothers had intended to help). Marius saw these unemployed as a way to gain power. He recruited them with promises of land. He now had a powerful army devoted to him.

Other generals saw this as an excellent idea and did similar things. They began to fight for power, especially after General Sulla takes over Rome militarily.

Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus forms the First Triumvirate. After Caesar dies, however, and since he did not appoint a successor, the generals once again began to fight for power.

The Roman army comprised citizen landowers. When the Germanic invasion of the late 1st Century BCE overwhelmed Roman forces, it was necessary to take recruits from the non-propertied class. The propertied-soldiers at he end of a campaign would take their share of the loot and go back to their farms. When the bulk of the army was drawn from the non-propertied class, they had no farms to go back to, and relied on their generals to get proper provision for them.

This put the generals in a position of power - they had armies at their back, and could use them to advance their own power. The civil wars rested on this base, and continued until Augustus allotted the provinces with armies to himself, and the Senate/senators were left with the provinces with no armies, and so were unabled from initiating trouble.

There was far more than a civil war in ancient Rome. In the last 64 years of the Roman Republic there were 12 civil wars. Most of them were related to clashes over power between strong military leaders and the conflict between populares and optimates spilling into military violence as opponents could mobilise some of the legions (army corps) on their side. The populares were a political faction which championed the cause of the poor and wanted reforms to help them. The optimates were a conservative political faction which favoured the aristocracy and opposed the reform. Moreover, the central government lost control over the governors of the provinces (conquered territories) who treated them as their personal fiefs, helped by the fact that they were also the commanders of the Roman troops stationed in the provinces. This was a recipe for disaster. This situation and the civil wars eventually led to the fall of the Republic, which was torn apart and replaced by rule by an emperor who was an absolute ruler.

There were four civil wars after the assassination of Julius Caesar. The first was the Liberators' Civil War which was a conflict between the Caesarians (the supporters of Caesar) and the forces opposed to them. It was fought between the Second Triumvirate (an alliance between Mark Antony, Octavian and Lepidus, three leading Caesarians) and the leaders of the plot to murder Caesar (Brutus and Cassius), who led the conservative forces. The Second Triumvirate won. The second one was the Perusine War, which was a rebellion of against Octavian, who was in charge of the western part of the Roman territories. It was suppressed. The third one was the Sicilian Revolt. It was fought by Sextus Pompey (the son of Pompey the Great who had led the forces which fought against Caesar) against the Second Triumvirate. He was defeated. The fourth and (the Final Civil War)one was a power struggle between Octavian and Mark Antony (who was in charge of the eastern part of the Roman territories. Octavian then dismantled the institutions of the Republic and became the first Roman emperor. Historians use the name Augustus for the period when he was emperor
