Some Nazis did a little homework ... In the Middle Ages the Catholic Church had ordered the civil authorities to make Jews to wear a clear, identifying badge on their outermost clothing. The most commonly used badge for this purpose was the Star of David in red or yellow, probably because it was easy to understand, but in some places other badges were used.
The use of this badge to mark out Jews has a long and shameful history. When Napoleon and the French Revolutionary Armies entered the city of Ancona in the Papal States in 1797, he noticed small groups of people huddled together, wearing the red badge. Napoleon was unfamiliar with this practice but immediately worked out that it was a discriminatory badge. He asked some of his officers to explain what was going on. Napoleon commented that the badge and enforced ghettoziation were contrary to the ideals of the French Revolution - liberty, equality, fraternity, and he banned the badge at once, and also the requirement that Jews live in a designated area (ghetto). He did the same in Rome and elsewhere, including Frankfurt. The ghettos in Rome and (with some modifications, also in Frankfurt) were reimposed in 1815, following the final defeat of Napoleon.
The purpose of the Yellow Star was to make Jews instantly recognizable. The use of a badge was not instantaneous throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. The Yellow Star, inscribed with the word "Jude," has become a symbol of Nazi persecution.
Some of it was sold as secondhand clothing (after the Yellow Star had been removed) and some was recycled.
They had to wear the Star of David when outside their homes after a number of decrees in 1941. There were other markers that Jews were required to use before the Yellow Star became the prominent and singular identifying mark of Jews in te Third Reich.
The Jewish Star represents the Unity of the Jewish People which is as important today for Jews as it was 2000 years ago, so the symbol is still used.
the Jewish badge was not instituted in 1933 when Hitler came to power. It was not instituted in 1935 when the Nuremberg Laws stripped Jews of their citizenship. It was still not implemented by Kristallnacht in 1938. The oppression and labeling of the Jews by use of the Jewish badge did not begin until after the start of the Second World War. And even then, it began as local laws rather than as a unified Nazi policy.

Yes. As of June 7, 1942, all Jews over the age of six were forced to wear the Star of David on the left side of a garment in plain sight, such as a coat. This was done intentionally to humiliate the Vichy government, which had been attempting to use Hitler's agenda as an excuse and justification for the deportation of foreign Jews from French soil.

because the war had nothing to do with whether they used it or not. The star of david has been in use for the best part of 3000 years
