Why did they need Kamikaze?

The aim of the Kamikaze was to sink the American Aircraft Carriers. It was a last ditch effort to snatch victory from defeat. The Japanese knew that as long as the American aircraft carriers patroled the Pacific they were doomed to ultimate defeat. After reading the first 77 pages of James Bradley's FLYBOYS... my understanding is that the officers in the Japanese army took the Samurai way of life and warped it to fit their needs. This is not the true lifestyle of the Japanese.

In the later stages of the war in the Pacific Japan was finding that their aircraft supply was running low on current high performance equipment and the skilled pilots were also few and far between.

They had many outdated aircraft and poorly trained pilots

This gave one particularly bloody minded General the idea of forming the Kamikaze squadrons.

They war for a brief time quite effective at damaging enemy warships in relation to the lost or used aircraft but ... and there is always a BUTT

It was a bad plan, by not having the air power to attack the ships of the enemy in the conventional manner this tactic could not be supported for long and was, when looked at from viewpoint of after the war, actually a sign that the war was lost by the time the squadrons were formed.

The Kamikaze was important inasmuch that it showed to the Allies the resolve that Japan had in resisting the Allied advance and it also set the example to the Japanese people what was to expected from them as far as personal sacrifice .
