The Bastille was a prison over 400 year old in Paris that housed general prisoners, political dissenters and also victims of the King's penal lettres du cachet (arrest and imprisonment without any benefit of trial or appeal). It had a notorious reputation for holding the latter two categories of prisoners and was seen as representing the oppression and abuse of privilege by the King and the nobility of France.
Its storming by Parisian demonstrators on July 14, 1789 is considered one of the actions that initiated and influenced the actions that occurred during the French Revolution.
It eventually led to the abolition of monarchy and the founding of the French Republic, which is why the French Republic celebrates its anniversary as a national holiday every year on July 14, regardless of the day of the week.
