Perspective painting did not become popular until the early rennisance period. With the earliest works know to emerge around the 14th century. Prior to that, and still popular in some Asian styles of art, objects in the back were near the top of the page with progressively closer objects near the bottom. Prior to the 14th century consistent perspective techniques apparently were rather crude at best.
A side view gave the best and most consistent way to illustrate without having a firm understanding of perspective.
