The American's held the Second Continental Congress to write the Declaration of Independence. They didn't want to be colonies under the control of the British, they wanted to be their own nation governed by themselves. They wrote the Declaration of Independence, signed it, appointed a Commanding General to the American Army, and they supposedly funded that army, which they really did not do. They barely paid for anything except for the money that the soldiers joined the army for.

because the patriot want to not be a nation with the

British any more.
