Because it's a marvelous and splendid religion. Qur'an and prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) hadiths (statements) are wonderful; they were having impact on almost everybody who reads them. Poets(Arab) were marveled and surprised by Qur'an's beauty (even enemies were listening to Qur'an just to enjoy it's loveliness). Later throughout the centuries scientists were encouraged by Qur'an and it led them to discover many things... There were a lot of scientists known as Muslims. Here's the list of some:
Abu Ali ibn Sina (aka Avicenna) - founder of medicine. Medicine is derived from words Madad(help, grace) and Sina(family name of the scientist), which together(Madadi Sina) mean "Grace of Sina".

Why did Islam become so popular in the middle east?

The reason why "Islam" is so popular in the Middle East is because prophet Mohammed (PBUH) was born in the Middle East in the city of Mecca or Makkah and at the age of 40 came with the religion of Islam. So basically why is Islam so popular in the Middle East its because its started there. Don't get me wrong it started at the beginning of time but then more and more people don't follow Islam so Allah (Arabic word for God) sent down messengers/prophets to follow people on the straight path. Religion in also much more central to political and cultural importance in the Middle East as a region than Europe or even America. As Islam is the dominant religion in that region, its effects are much more pronounced. ________________________________________________________ Islam religion is important to the follower of Islam where ever he is living. Only small percentage of world Muslims are in the Middle East. Muslims in the Middle East are only around 15% of total world Muslim population. So, Islam religion importance is not limited to the Middle East.

How did Islam come to Africa south of the Sahara Desert?

There is a problem in that this question assumes that "Islam", a religion/concept/ideology, etc. can have its own agency. "Islam" is only extant at the will of its believers, so we can answer how Islam made it to Africa, but assert no existential reason "why Africa was chosen" or something similar, since Islam did no choosing. Islam was first brought to Africa (Egypt specifically) by the Islamic conquests under the Rightly-Guided Caliphate. The successor Umayyad Caliphate conquered all of North Africa from 640-680 C.E. and brought the religion with them as they conquered. In some areas, especially the urban centers, conversion to Islam occurred rapidly (100-200 years) but in the rural areas, conversion was generally slower. There were only a few attempts in the first 300 years of Islam in North Africa to convert people to Islam by force. As for Sub-Saharan Africa, Islam was originally brought and spread by Arab and Amazigh traders from North Africa. Their educated nature and good disposition led to the peaceful conversion of the African civilization of Ghana to Islam and the founding of the Islamic Mali Empire and Songhai Empire. In the Horn of Africa and Sudan, Christianity were relatively firmly planted. However, Muslims began to make in-roads by forming naval city-states in Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania. The Egyptian conquest of Sudan several centuries later led to the conversion of the north Sudanese to Islam.

Do you believe that Islam and the West are engaged in a clash of civilizations and can you explain your view?

The media and the west clearly seem to be against Islam, which is why Islam is so negatively portrayed by the media. The main reason is that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and the west seem to be afraid of it growing any further.
