Slavery has played a big role in US history. The US imported slaves mostly to work the fields in the southern states. World opinion turned against slavery and the slave trade was outlawed . There were problems with returning runaway slaves and what to do with new states.
Slave states wanted to keep a balance so that slavery would not be outlawed by the Federal government. The problem was eventually settled by a bloody Civil War.
