Because the rest of the world uses the metric system. Since the US Military "travels" alot, they need to know their distances in other countries. Because the world standard is Metric. Only the U.S., of all developed nations, still uses inches, feet and yards, gallons, ounces and pints. It really is sad.

What is an example of something you would measure in meters?

Anything that you might measure in yards, can easily be measured in meters. For example, the length of a car, the distance to cross a street, etc. You would NOT use meters to measure something rather small like the length of a pencil.

Why would you measure the total length of a bus in meters rather than centimeters?

Meters are bigger than centimeters thus making it easier to measure.

What object can you measure in kilometers?

Kilometers are more likely to be used to measure the distance between two places, rather than the size of objects, since in our normal experience, objects are more likely to be measured by meters or centimeters rather than by kilometers. However, the diameter of planets and their moons, or of the sun or stars, can be measured in kilometers.

How do you convert 1600 meters in 242.70 seconds?

You cannot.A metre is a measure of length in 1-dimensional space while a second (in this context) is a measure of time. The two measure different characteristics and, according to the most basic principles of dimensional analysis, any attempt at comparisons or conversions between the two are fundamentally flawed.

Is time a function of distance in the context of physics?

In the context of physics, time and distance are related but not interchangeable. Time is not a function of distance, but rather a separate dimension that is intertwined with space in the concept of spacetime. Time is a measure of the duration of events, while distance is a measure of the separation between objects in space.

Why do you use aus for distances between the sun and planets and use light years between stars and galaxies?

We like to measure things in convenient numbers, without lining up TOO many zeroes. So we measure the distance from home to work in miles or kilometers, not inches or centimeters. We measure the distance from Earth to the other planets in AU rather than in miles, and we measure the distances to the stars in light years rather than in miles or AU. An even larger unit, the megaparsec, is used to describe the distance to very distant galaxies.

How many meters are in Columbia and Charleston?

Water meters, parking meters, gas meters, square meters... In addition, there are at least 25 Columbias and Charlestons in the US. Please resubmit a more specific question. What is the distance between Columbia, SC and Charleston, SC in meters? or What is the area of Columbia, SC and Charleston, SC in square meters are two possibilities but I'd rather not guess...

How many miles to 5 acres?

It is not possible to determine the distance in miles to 5 acres, as acres measure land area rather than distance. Acreage is a unit of measurement for land, not distance.

Why do astronomores measure in distance in space in light years rather then kilometres?

the distances in space are too large (astronomical) to use such small units as kms

How far is a geographic second?

In latitude, 1 second is equivalent to roughly 30.8 meters. In latitude, 1 second is equivalent to roughly 30.8 meters along the equator, and it shrinks steadily to zero at the poles. In general, it's 30.8 meters multiplied by the cosine of the latitude where it's being measured.

How many centimers in a liter?

It is not possible to measure the amount of centimeters in a liter. This is because centimeters are used to measure distance and liters is used to measure liquids.

What distance North or south on a map can be measure?
