Not his job. Captains fight the battle, Field Grade officers control the battlefield (hence the name, "Field Grade" from the word "Battlefield"), and Generals DISTRIBUTE the forces.

Same with the navy; Admirals are aboard a particular warship (the flagship) but they don't fight the ship, the captain of that vessel fights his ship. The admiral simply gives orders concerning the fleet that he's commanding. He's basically a "guest" aboard that warship.
