When people from other countries hear that America is the "land of the free", what they are actually hearing and misunderstanding is a line from our national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" by Sir Francis Scott Key, written on September 14th, 1814. When people speak of America being the land of the free, a lot of people misinterpret the meaning of the word free, thinking that everything in America is actually free. What the actual meaning of this phrase means is that as a country the United States has a free society of people who are not under rule of tyrant or king or dictator, that we are a land of freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom from political or religious persecution, freedom of self expression, freedom to live your life as you please, as long as it does not impinge on the rights or freedom of others.
