When people from other countries hear that America is the "land of the free", what they are actually hearing and misunderstanding is a line from our national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" by Sir Francis Scott Key, written on September 14th, 1814. When people speak of America being the land of the free, a lot of people misinterpret the meaning of the word free, thinking that everything in America is actually free.
