It nearly wasn't the first settlement . When the 102 men landed in 1607 they came as adventurers and gold seekers. They were sent by investors. They took up an area of land that was the worse in the entire region and was part of a Native American empire of 14,000. Within six month only 34 of the 102 were still alive. If it hadn't been for tobacco most likely it would have been a blip in history.
