Sometimes, if you are on a hill or against a curb, the weight of the vehicle is being held by the parking gear. When that happens you are pulling a gear that has about 2000 pounds pushing against it. Next time, set the parking brake before you put it in park. See if that helps.
Also, sometimes the neutral safety switch isn't exactly perfect. That's the switch that holds the gearshift until you press on the brake. It could be either problem, or possibly even something else... but those are the two most likely culprits.
I have a 95 and as odd as this seems, I used to keep change in the ashtray, some must fell out and under the gear shifter and jammed it up. Found it in there, emptied the change outta the tray and haven't had that problem again.
Yes
Shift Cable
you have to put your foot on the break pedal, to shift out of park its a safety feature
Odds are the clutch is in need of a adjustment or replacement.
Does this happen all the time?
Your synchro is going bad.
It could be mechanical or it could be electrical. Sometimes if you park on a steep incline or park hard up on a curb, the shift will be difficult to come out of park but it should with a little extra pull on the lever. Also, check the fuses. many vehicles today must have the brake pedal applied to release the shift lever from park. If the fuse is blown that protects that circuit, the shift lever will not move.
The reasons that it may be hard to shift into another gear may be due to the transmission failing. However, most likely there are loose parts at the bottom of the steering column.
the shifter lock need to be lubed to override the shift lock press hard on the brake and move shift over to unlock and pull down this will override it but not fix it remove shift covers and lube shift lock and should be fine
check fluid in tranie....and LUCAS tranie lube
My guess would be you shift shaft teeth are worn or your clutch is going out. Also check and see if the shifter is rubbing and catching on anything.
Shift interlock. Push the brake and shift into gear and if it is cold out you may have to push hard on the button on the shifter while holding the brake.
