It is strange that the U.S. allowed slavery because although our country stated that all men are equal, plantation owners in the South owned African-American slaves who were treated like property, not people. Regardless of the color of their skin, these slaves were people, just like the white Americans. In a way, it was like the U.S. government was being hypocritical about the issue of being treated equally and justly.
