The United States broke away from England in 1776, declaring their independence. When our country was formed, law makers stated that all men are created equal. It is strange that the U.S. allowed slavery because although our country stated that all men are equal, plantation owners in the South owned African-American slaves who were treated like property, not people. Regardless of the color of their skin, these slaves were people, just like the white Americans. In a way, it was like the U.S. government was being hypocritical about the issue of being treated equally and justly.
