The Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor (which took place on December 7, 1941) was important for several reasons. That it reduced American naval strength is undeniable; however, much more importantly, it galvanized the American will to fight. Previously, many Americans had been opposed to war; now, with a sneak-attack having been perpetrated by their new enemy, America was inspired by a fighting spirit that would stop at nothing less than total victory.
