In the context of Irish History the Easter Rising of 1916 was the beginning of the rebellion against British rule in Ireland that culminated in the War of Independence and the setting up of the modern state of Ireland -- and also the creation of Northern Ireland. The Rising itself was a failure but the treatment and execution of its leaders caused an outcry which sparked further armed resistance until independence in 1921.
