It joins the northern and southern shores of Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour)- its original function, but as a distinctive design it came to be associated with Sydney before air travel became common- it was one of the first things people saw when they arrived by sea. Of course the Opera House is also very distinctive, and it's possible to see both "objects" and even get them in the same photograph.

The bridge is also important as one of our early major technological works, and was a huge source of employment during the depression. It was (and still is, to those who think about it) viewed with great pride.
