The entire river has always been called Chang Jiang (Long River) for many dynasties, but *parts* of the river have different names.

The portion near Sichuan is called Chuan Jiang, the part near Jing Zhou is called Jing Jiang, while the section near Yang Zhou (of the fried rice fame) is called Yangzi Jiang. Since foreigners first settled on the east coast of China, and Yang Zhou is the eastern region of the Chang Jiang river, foreigners knew it as Yangzi or "Yangtze" river.
