The scarab beetle was sacred to the ancient Egyptians. It was sacred because it was associated with the god who pushes the sun across the sky in much the same way that the scarab (dung beetle) rolls a ball of dung over the earth.

During and following the New Kingdom, scarab amulets were placed over the heart of mummies. These amulets were meant to be weighed against the Feather of Truth during the souls journey to final judgement.
