WSM developed as a tourist centre in Victorian times when the British were suddenly taking an interest in leisure. People had the time and money for short holidays.
With the rise of cheap flights and longer holidays people would rather visit more exotic places leaving places like Weston the home to day trippers.
Weston Super Mare also suffers from a poor reputation - facilities have become shabby or closed (Tropicana) and it has become the victim of seasonal unemployment and a thriving drugs scene.
It doesn't help the the locals call it weston super mud!

The 'super Mare' part of the name dates from medieval times and is not the result of Victorian snobbery. It is Latin for 'on sea'.
Mare nostrum was the Roman's nickname for the Mediterranean. It meant our sea.
Interestingly, the mare in nightmare has nothing to do with a female horse. Instead, it comes from Old English maere 'goblin, incubus.' The word was nigt-mare in 1300, and it referred to an evil female spirit afflicting sleepers with a feeling of suffocation. By 1350, it was nytmare and in 1440 it was nyghte mare. Mare 'goblin' is a cognate with Middle Dutch mare, maer 'incubus,' Old High German mara, Middle High German mar, mare(dialectical modern German Mahr 'nightmlare'), and Old Icelandic mara 'incubus.' Mare comes from the Proto-Germanic word *maron. Nightmare was used to describe 'a bad dream caused by an incubus' in the 16th century, and by 1829 it was used to describe 'a bad dream' in general.
