In the Treaty of Irish independence in 1921, the British government demanded "compensation" for the transfer of buildings, equipment etc. The Irish government refused, the British imposed economic sanctions , the Irish retaliated etc......The slogan among Irish nationalists was "Burn everything British except their coal"
