I imagine it's because, that is probably the only part of the procedure where every person can truly be treated equally. We all have to use the same source or means to be sworn in by, no matter what the race, religion or financial state.

This is just my opinion. Not meant to OFFEND anyone.

Did Obama put his hand on the Bible on his inauguration?

No, this is a myth. Barack Obama is a Christian and was sworn in at the Senate with his hand on a Bible in 2004. He used a Bible that he owned, and the oath was administered by Dick Cheney. When he became president in 2008, he was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice John Roberts and used a bible once owned by Martin Luther King, and another that was used by Abraham Lincoln. But, there was a person in the House of Representatives who is Muslim (Keith Ellison of Minnesota) who was sworn-in using a Koran once owned by Thomas Jefferson.

When in court do you need a sworn statement?

No you don't.In many courts, the UK included, it is normal to swear an oath on the bible or otherwise swear a declaration. For religious reasons, an atheist can make a promise and does not need to use a bible at all. Also, for religious reasons, some Christians refuse to swear an oath because the bible instructs not to swear and they are able to make a promise before God.For others with religious beliefs that are non Christian, courts have forms of promise that are acceptable to them. All countries and all courts have their own rules and guidelines.
