On October 8, 1918 acting Corporal York killed at least 28 Germans by himself and captured another 132, eliminating numerous machine guns and saving the rest of his small detachment from death. In recognition of this he was promoted to sergeant and awarded several medals, including the Distinguished Service Cross and the Medal of Honor. York had applied for conscientious objector status, for religious reasons, when drafted, but was turned down.

Acting corporal Alvin C. York, on October 8, 1918. This was during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive near the end of WWI. York, later promoted to sergeant, was a member of the 328th Infantry Regiment of the US 82nd Infantry Division. (The 82nd Division did not become "airborne" until just before WWII).
