It was the city through which Allies got supplies. When Germans invaded Antwerp, Allied supply lines were cut off.

It was the last great German counterattack on the western front, recovering some ground from the advancing Allied (American) forces. By repulsing it, the Allies drove on to end the war about four months later. The Battle of the Bulge (also known as the Ardennes Offensive and the Von Rundstedt Offensive to the Germans) (16 December 1944 - 25 January 1945) was a major German offensive (die Ardennenoffensive), launched toward the end of World War II through the densely forested Ardennes mountain region of Wallonia in Belgium, hence its French name (Bataille des Ardennes), and France and Luxembourg on the Western Front. The Wehrmacht's code name for the offensive was Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein ("Operation Watch on the Rhine"), after the German patriotic hymn Die Wacht am Rhein.

General Gamelin dismissed intelligence reports that the Germans were massing most of their forces opposite of the Ardennes. He had been fooled by the Germans as they made a diversionary assault against Holland and Belgium. Based on what the Geramns did in World War One, Gamelin ordered his armies into Belgium. In fact, the Germans had mapped out a passage through the Ardennes, and planned their main assault there where France had the least amount of troops.
In 1943, the Battle of the Bulge was referred to by the Germans as Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein and the French called it the Bataille des Ardennes. The Allies referred to it as the Ardennes Counteroffensive.
The December 1944 offensive took place in Belgium in their Ardennes Forest. This info comes from Wikipedia labeled The Battle of the Bulge.***The Ardennes Offensive (16 December 1944 -- 25 January 1945) was a major German offensive (die Ardennenoffensive), launched towards the end of World War II through the densely forested Ardennes Mountains region of Belgium (and more specifically of Wallonia: hence its French name, Bataille des Ardennes), France and Luxembourg on the Western Front. The Wehrmacht's code name for the offensive was Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein (in English: "Operation Watch on the Rhine"), after the German patriotic hymn Die Wacht am Rhein. This German offensive was officially named the Ardennes-Alsace campaign[14] by the U.S. Army,[15] but it is known to the English-speaking general public simply as the Battle of the Bulge. The "bulge" was the initial incursion the Germans put into the Allies' line of advance, as seen in maps presented in contemporary newspapers.
the first attack from the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge was to attack and control the Elseborn ridge in Belgium, as it was the only bridge that Hitler could safely use to transfer his tanks. After this it began to spread to Luxembourg and back to Nazi Germany.
