Although the Battle of Dunkirk was one of the biggest defeats the British Army had ever suffered, 338,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated from the Dunkirk area when they thought that they would only be able to rescue about one tenth of that number. The rescue meant that the British were able to regroup and establish a nucleus for continuing the war.
