George Washington went to congress in a tailored blue wool uniform with brass buttons to become commander of American forces. He cited his experience as a British officer in the French and Indian war as a good reason they needed him. At over six feet, with red hair, and in his uniform he must have made a real sight and very convincing. He had an interesting combination of real life experience and the wealthy plantation owner as part of his resume'.
