Why was Great Britain interested in america?

Great Britain and Spain were very competitive during the 16th and 17th centuries. Great Britain wanted to settle colonies in North America to find gold and possibly the Northwest Passage. Both were top on the lists of Spain and England's "To Find" lists. If England found either first, then Great Britain would be rich and flourish.

In the American Revolutionary Period, Great Britain's interest in its North American colonies was both commercial and proprietary. It was commercial because these colonies provided Great Britain with goods and revenue of a profitable sort. It was proprietary simply because, as the original colonizer of the American lands, Great Britain saw itself as both origin and owner alike of the colonies as a whole.
