Dr. Jose Rizal angered the Spanish authorities because of his exposes on the injustices committed by both the Spanish civil and clerical officials. Because of this he was imprisoned in Fort Santiago and exiled in Dapitan.
When the Philippine Revolution broke out in August 1896, Rizal was blamed for having started it. For this he was again imprisoned in Fort Santiago until his execution on 30 December 1896.
