Kitty Hawk, North Carolina is important to U.S. history because it was the sight of the first ever successful powered airplane flight by Wilbur and Orville Wright on December 17th, 1903. The very first flight (piloted by Orville) was about 12 seconds long, and he went the distance of about 120 feet. I believe that they made a few other flights that day, but I'm not sure of all the details. I do know that Wilbur made the final flight and set a record of 852 feet in 59 seconds, before coming to a crashing halt with some minor damage to the plane. Truely groundbreaking for the time!

They chose Kitty Hawk, NC because the beach there has a constant breeze that was necessary to achieve lift on their airplane.
