Susan B. Anthony was a progressive well ahead of her time. She questioned the legitimacy of the government. She claimed the nation's problems were the result of white men in power. She was a leading suffragist, and she and a few friends were arrested in 1872 for attempting to vote in the presidential election of that year. Many Americans and politicians believed she was much too radical. She at one point claimed that the US was an odious aristocracy and a hateful oligarchy of sex.
