The British were camped nearby. Washington could keep tabs on them.

Valley Forge had a river for drinking water.

Valley Forge had geographical features such as hills where American soldiers could defend the location.

The things Valley Forge PA did not have were:

  1. shoes for barefoot soldiers
  2. warm clothing to replace rags
  3. blankets
  4. adequate food
  5. lots of log buildings so diseases did not spread as easily
  6. no where to house the sick separate from well soldiers
  7. antibiotics were not yet discovered (not until World War 2)
  8. they used medicinal herbs, if they could find them under the snow
