He wrote over a hundred and fifty sonnets, many considered among the best in the English language. He owned part interest in an acting company and two playhouses. His plays have been in almost continuous production since their first performances. His works are translated into virtually every known language, and he is studied in English, literature, drama, and theater classes around the world.
